NERD GIRL EDITS

Unlock your book's potential

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will an edit change my voice?

No. The purpose of an edit is to enhance the author’s voice, not bury it. But sometimes to do that, an editor may need to suggest cuts or different ways to say something, to improve readability and flow.

Can I try you out first?

Yes, and I encourage you to do so. Choosing an editor is a personal decision. That editor must be on the same wavelength as you and your writing. So please get in touch and we can discuss your requirements. After we chat over email, you can send me the first 1,000 words of your manuscript and I’ll edit it for free. I will aim to have that back to you within 2 business days.

Do you work with American authors?

Absolutely. I’ve written books in both US and UK English and understand the spelling differences. I have also completed specialised (specialized for US!) training with the Editorial Freelancers Association in the US. I’m comfortable editing in either language. For both styles, I use Chicago Manual of Style, but refer to Merriam-Webster Online dictionary for US and Collins Online dictionary for UK.

How much do you charge?

Per word is the fairest and most reasonable cost. My prices for a manuscript assessment are listed. For editing, I would need to see a sample first, as no two writers' needs are the same.

How do I pay?

Clients can pay via Wise (a free bank-to-bank service), or PayPal (plus PP admin fee of 5.4%). I ask that clients pay half the full amount before I start work, then pay the balance after they’ve received the final manuscript/report.

What happens if I only want a proofread but you tell me my manuscript needs more work?

I may politely decline to edit it. If there are deeper issues with the book itself, it could be money wasted, as any changes you make to the manuscript will ultimately require a new proofread.
