Manuscript Assessment - Fiction

"An author friend of mine recommended Kate for an in-depth review of a book I had written a couple of years ago.

Kate prepared a deep-dive analysis of the manuscript which was exactly what I was hoping for. The comments were discerning and incredibly helpful, and the details plentiful. This has allowed me to make changes that have made a big difference, making the book a compelling read."

Who is it for?

Brand new fiction writers

who have never published before and want a detailed assessment of their story and style.

Established fiction authors

who want better read-through/are getting average reviews, and want a full assessment to sell more books.

What it is

If your fiction manuscript has major technical errors that might be losing you readers, or would delay the start of a copy edit, a full technical review of your story and style could be for you.

Overall Impression: Strengths, weaknesses, and potential. Is the premise compelling, the genre clear?

Target Audience & Marketability: Who is the book for? How does it compare to similar titles (comp titles), and what's its potential for success in the current publishing market?

Structure and Pacing: Plot structure, scene arrangement, and the effectiveness of the pacing.

Voice and Tone: Every writer has their own writing style, but is what they've written suitable for the genre?

Character Development: Are the characters rounded or one dimensional? We dig into motivation, and arc, and look out for actions that are consistent and engaging.

Style and Clarity: We dig into the quality of the prose at a sentence level, looking for clarity, conciseness, effective use of dialogue, and descriptive language. Note: This is an assessment only, not a line-by-line copy edit.

Consistency and Worldbuilding: Does the the coherence and depth of the created world and its rules work?

Testimonials

"I was recommended Kate's services for my debut science-fiction novel, which I wanted to have assessed to highlight any issues that needed to be fixed before publication. Kate's feedback was incredibly thorough, covering a lot of points that no one else had brought up before. Part of this was the summary she put together, which was extraordinarily helpful in pinpointing where facts I thought were clear had actually come across wrong.

I'm a lot more confident in my novel now that I've acted on her feedback, and much of her advice will be useful for me to keep in mind when I work on future projects."

Katherine Franklin -  Science Fiction Space Opera

"When I chose Kate to give an assessment of my now completed manuscript, I had no idea how thorough and detailed it would be. I had shopped many other editors before I came across Kate's website, most of whom provided samples of what their past edits or what they would entail, and I honestly don't think those editors would have been quite as generous with their time or edits as Kate was with mine--and her rates were just as good as theirs, or better.

She was that critical eye I was in dire need of--the voice of that friend who isn't afraid to tell you what she really thinks (in the nicest way possible), and I believe my book has significantly improved because of her insightful feedback and overall guidance in revamping my story. Some of the suggestions she offered made all of the difference.

Kate was very professional and always ahead of schedule in delivering her edits. She was thoughtful and encouraging, and I would definitely work with her again for future works. "

Crystal Lancaster - Contemporary Women's Fiction

"An author friend of mine recommended Kate for an in-depth review of a book I had written a couple of years ago. Kate prepared a deep-dive analysis of the manuscript which was exactly what I was hoping for. The comments were discerning and incredibly helpful, and the details plentiful. This has allowed me to make changes that have made a big difference, making the book a compelling read.

Kate is not only a gifted editor. She works hard to deliver quality work, always on time and is a pleasure to work with. She is honest at telling you what she feels needs changing but supportive at the same time…and you can always agree to disagree!

A highly recommended professional whether you are looking for the editing of a new or already-published book."
